Infrared heating / Anti Icing


One major cause of static filter failure in sub-zero temperature climate is the formation of frost. Depending on the weather conditions such as temperature versus relative humidity, frost then ice on the air filters will lead to filter clogging / reduce the airflow. At some point, the equipment is not able to operate in satisfactory conditions and is tripped / stopped.


Infrared heating systems of Filsure prevent freezing of air intake filters of gas power and gas compression stations in the cold season. Infrared heating for anti-icing can be integrated into the filtration system to make it more efficient and to save energy.


We have developed a range of infrared anti-icing emitters suitable for gas turbine / compressor combustion air intake systems. Infrared heating systems of Filsure prevent the freezing of air intake filters of gas power and gas compression stations in the cold season. Infrared heating for anti-icing can be integrated into the filtration system to make it more efficient and to save energy.


Filsure has a unique know-how and experience to install infrared anti-icing solutions in air intake systems. Infrared anti-icing was developed taking into account the constraints of the application, in particular to resist to shocks and vibrations.


For gas turbine combustion air intake systems, following solutions are used:

  • Air heating with heat tracing vanes etc.
  • Air heating by injection of warm air.

In both solutions, the intake air is heated by a few degrees to avoid frost conditions. However, a warm intake air reduces the overall efficiency of a turbine. In addition, the use of heated vanes creates additional pressure drop across air intake system. By heating the intake air, the loss of efficiency is significant and in range of 6-8%.


An efficient anti-icing system, which above all must operate quickly and reliably, has to guarantee the availability of the power plant even in the cold winter months. The infrared anti icing sysem is controlled by a thermostat, which switches on the heaters when the temperature falls below a set level and switches them off when the temperature rises to a pre-set level.


It is important to select the correct emitter for the product, as the wavelength has a significant influence on the heating process. Short wave radiation can penetrate deep into some solid materials and ensure a uniform through heating.


Medium wave radiation is absorbed mostly in the outer surface and predominantly heats the surface. Medium wave radiation is particularly well absorbed by many plastics, glass and especially water and is converted directly into heat.


Infrared anti-icing is available with a various length ranging from 600 mm to 2500 mm.
